Gluten Free Apple Crisp

Simple, classic Gluten Free Apple Crisp has been a family favorite for decades. With minimal ingredients and prep work, it’s a quick, easy, affordable, and delicious recipe you’re sure to love.

Don’t Mess With a Classic

There are some recipes that need updating and others that you always make exactly the same, every single time. And this Gluten Free Apple Crisp is one of them. The recipe is from a 1950s cookbook my mom has, and the only change I’ve made was swapping out the all purpose flour and oats for gluten free products.

I have been eating this apple crisp for over 30 years, and I look forward to it every time my mom or I make it. And the best part? It is so. freakin. simple. AND it uses minimal ingredients. That’s a win-win in my book!

What’s In Gluten Free Apple Crisp?

While most apple crisp recipes call for Granny Smith apples, otherwise known as baking apples, my mom has always made her apple crisp with Golden Delicious apples, and I prefer it that way. The Golden Delicious still hold their shape and don’t turn to complete mush like a softer red apple would, but they aren’t as tart as a Granny Smith. So it’s like you get the best of both worlds: firmer apple and a little more sweetness.

After the apples, there’s only 5 additional ingredients for this gluten free apple crisp. Yup, that’s it, just 5 ingredients. No nutmeg, no lemon juice; just cinnamon, brown sugar, GF oats, GF flour, and butter.

Which means that not only is this recipe ridiculously simple, it’s also super inexpensive. The only thing you should have to buy are the apples and maybe the vanilla ice cream. (I realize not everyone is an ice cream addict like me, and you all don’t always have a gallon of vanilla ice cream in your freezer at all times). Everything else comes from the pantry or fridge, so we’re talking like $10.00 to make this. Ahem, yes, please.

Tips for Making Gluten Free Apple Crisp

I hate to admit it, but I don’t have too many tips for you when it comes to this gluten free apple crisp. There’s only 4 steps:

  1. Peel and cut the apples, and place them in a pie plate.
  2. Make the crumble and press on top of the apples.
  3. Bake.
  4. Eat. With a healthy scoop of vanilla ice cream, obvs.

However, there are a few things I want you to remember:

  • Make sure that you slice the apples approximately the same size, about 1/4 -1/2 inch thick. That way all of the apples will cook evenly.
  • Use cold butter for the crumble, otherwise you’ll end up with something more like a dry bowl of porridge than crumble.
  • I find clean hands to be the best tool for mixing up the crumble and cutting in the butter. If you have a pastry blender, that works well too. Just remember, the butter will be cold, so it’s a little more difficult to work with, which I why I prefer to use my hands to break it up.
